17th March 2011: The National Literacy Association (NLA) today announces ‘The Guide to Literacy Resources 2011 – Online’, a free, time-saving aid for teachers looking for high quality, appropriate teaching material.
The guide, which has been created by the NLA and supported by National Union of Teachers (NUT), British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) and National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), aims to help teachers and other professionals looking for a central and objective source of information about materials (books, software, new technologies and multi-sensory resources) for supporting and encouraging children’s literacy.
Products listed in the guide have been selected by the NLA’s Quality Control panel from materials submitted for review by participating companies and assessed against a number of criteria based on quality and their suitability to the stated learning objectives.
Charlie Griffiths, Projects Director and Editor of The Guide for NLA comments; “The NLA Guide to Literacy Resources 2011 is accessible by teachers, parents and others and is easily searchable by criteria such as key stage, subject area and format. We will keep the resources updated regularly to ensure they are always appropriate and the inclusive online discussion forum will assist teachers in sharing ideas and advice.”
Ray Barker, Director of BESA adds; “The challenges of school’s budgets and the new government’s focus on phonics and reading means that this could not have come at a better time. The online format will help busy teachers find what they really need and assist them to become more informed purchasers.’
