YoungMinds launch nationwide workshops to help the children’s workforce meet young peoples mental health needs
The recent Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) review found that the children’s workforce need better knowledge of child development and mental health so that they are more able to meet children and young people’s needs. With one in 10 children and young people experiencing serious mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, this is no longer a problem that can be ignored.
This doesn’t mean that everyone needs to become a qualified psychiatrist, but teachers and youth workers need to know the signs and symptoms to watch out for and know how and where to refer to CAMHS. Providing staff with these skills will ensure that children and young people get help when their problems first occur rather than waiting until a crisis develops.
The one day training events will enable participants to:
· Identify children and young people experiencing or at risk of mental health problems
· Intervene early to provide support
· Understand the complex language used by specialists such as attachment , brain development, risk and resilience
Joe, Youth and Community Worker, Belfast who took part in the training course earlier this year said: “I would highly recommend this training to all those working with children: excellent – inspiring and practical “
